FILM

Although I am primarily a photographer, I enjoy working with filmmakers to create short documentaries. Here are some examples of when I had the role of director, camerawoman or editor. In some projects we have collaborated with performers such as color graders, sound editors and editors.

MY RETIRED PARENTS  (13 minutes)

Every winter, my parents drive from the Netherlands to southern Europe with their camper van. After 40 years of full-time working, they are now busy with cooking food, hanging out on sunny boulevards and playing jeu de boules with their neighbours. I followed them during their daily routines.

FRANS NELISSEN  (1.40 minutes)   

Hearing aid company Beter Horen (Hear Better) asked me to film some of their clients. Frans Nelissen is one of them, and in this short documentary he explains how he found out that he had a hearing problem, and despite this discovering how he could still continue with his passion for music.

FIRST DAY ON EARTH   (41 seconds)

Rutgers WPF gave me the assignment to create a short impression about the new-born babies and their mothers in Ntcheu hospital in Malawi. Click here to watch the associated photo series.

OUTSIDE SYRIA (1.47 minutes)

My partner Philip and I decided to create a virtual 'bridge' between the Syrians and the Dutch. On Facebook we asked them what they would like to know from each other. The entire project can be seen here.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK? (2 minutes) In assigment for UNICEF

Through news reports we learn about what is going on in the world, but what do we know about one another? With that in mind I asked Facebook-friends if they perhaps had a personal question for the Syrians who have been forced to live in Jordan for years. (Idea/director: Marieke, Camera: DJ van den Aardweg, editor: Philip)

CHILDREN OF THE LABYRINTH  (Trailer, 1 minute)

This project presents the impressive letters that refugee parents - all stranded in Greece -  have written to their children. The letters offer a deep human insight into what it really feels like for a parent to have to expose your little one to a life-threatening European labyrinth. Watch the project here.

TRAVELING TO BAGHDAD  (4.10 minutes) 

Dutch journalist Paulien Bakker is travelling to Baghdad for the 11th time, and I'm following her during her trip. This documentary is part of our joint project 'Baghdad Today'.

THE ISLAND OF ALL TOGETHER (Trailer, 1 minute)

Together with my partner and husband Philip Brink, I created a short film about conversations between tourists and refugees on the Greek island Lesbos. You can watch the entire film and the project here.
