The border between Belgium and The Netherlands was established in 1831.
In the last 50 years Europe tries to become one nation. After the convention of Schengen (1985) the border police stopped controlling the border areas. Nowadays masses of travelers gliding silently across the border who slowly seems to disappear in the landscape.
But does the border also disappear in our mind? Does it matter if you are a Dutch or
a Belgian? Or have we all become Europeans?
Asking this question in the border area's of both countries shows it's not that simpel to fade away a border in the minds of people. We did not meet one European, only Dutchies or Belgians.
THE FADED BORDER BETWEEN BELGIUM AND THE NETHERLANDS
While the contours of one Europe are becoming increasingly apparent, the border between Belgium and the Netherlands is fading.
Along with journalist Mérie van der Rijt I wandered through this wasteland, our premise being that we were not allowed to go further than 200 metres away from the border. And so we went through a very long and narrow area from South Limburg to the coast of Zeeland. An area full of stories.
